Fanmix- The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

They Are Most Beautiful Before They're Gone

Behind the cut- 18 songs, 18-page lyrics booklet, individual song links, and zip file.

A few notes before we begin:
1. This mix has nothing, and I mean NOTHING, on the original score of this movie.
2. Every blink in this movie can be interpreted in 10 different ways. This mix is my personal interpretation.
3. This mix -does- imply Jesse/Bob slashiness. But then again, so does the movie.
4. Quotes are from the movie.

2. Midlake- Roscoe
3. Townes Van zandt- Hunger Child Blues
4. The Decemberists- The Engine Driver
5. Neko Case- The Lion's Jaws

7. 16 Horsepwer- Scrawled In Sap

16. Joni Mitchell- Blue
17. Beck- Guess I'm doing Fine
18. (bonus track)Over The Rhine- Born

Rooms seemed hotter when he was in them. Rains fell straighter, clocks slowed. Sounds were amplified. He considered himself a Southern loyalist and guerrilla in a civil war that never ended. He regretted neither his robberies nor the seventeen murders that he laid claim to. He has seen another summer under in Kansas City, Missouri, and on September fifth, in the year 1881, he was thirty-four years old.

16 Horsepower- Outlaw Song

Frank James: Well you can just get shed of that idea. Because after tonight there will be no more shenanigans. You can jot that down in your little diary: September 7th, 1881, The James gang robbed one last train at Blue Cut and gave up their nightriding for good.

Midlake- Roscoe

Bob Ford: Well I'm sorry to hear you feel that way, as I put such stock in your opinions. As for me being a gunslinger I just got this one Granddaddy Patterson Colt, and a borrowed belt to stick it in. But I also got an apatite for greater things. I hoped by joining up with you it would put me that much closer to getting them.

Townes Van Zandt- Hunger Child Blues

He was listed in the city directory as Thomas Howard, and he went everywhere unrecognized, and lunched with Kansas City's shopkeepers and merchants, calling himself a cattleman, or a commodities investor, someone rich and leisured who had the common touch.

The Decemberists- The Engine Driver

Bob Ford: I can't believe I woke up this morning wondering if my daddy would loan me his overcoat, and here it is just past midnight, I've already robbed a railroad train, and I'm sitting in a rocking chair chatting with none other than Jesse James.

Neko Case- Lion's Jaws

Jesse: I can't figure it out. Do you want to be like me, or do you want to be me?
Bob: Aw, I'm just makin' fun, is all.

The Arcade Fire- My Body Is A Cage

Dick Liddil: They say that when a woman's on fire, you're supposed to roll her around on the ground and cover her with your body.

16 Horsepower- Scrawled In Sap

Charley: Well, one thing's settled, can't take him into Richmond.
Martha: Why not?
Charley: Well, one, Sheriff will put Bob in jail, and two, Jesse will find out his cousin Wood's been shot in our house, and that'll be the end of each and every one of us."

Patterson Hood- Rising Son

Charley:...I decided to josh him a little you know, him being my kid brother and everything, so I said "he doesn't have toes, is why.
Bob: That's a really stupid story.
Charley: Catfish nibbled his toes off." Bob taxed himself trying to picture it!
Bob: That's be a good joke. If it was funny.

Starsailor- Poor Misguided Fool

Jesse: Charley, you'll stay with the animals. Me and the kid...will walk into that bank just before noon. Bob'll move that cashier..away from the shotgun that's under the counter...and I'll creep up behind that cashier. And I'll COCK HIS HEAD BACK LIKE SO. And I'll say, "how come and off scouring of creation like you still sucking air with so many of mine in coffins?!" I'll say, "how did you get to reach your 20th birthday without leaking out all over your clothes?!" And if I don't like his attitude, I will SLIT THAT FILDOODLE SO DEEP, HE WILL FLOP ON THE FLOOR LIKE A FISH!

Magnolia Electric Co.- Such Pretty Eyes For A Snake

Jesse: Now I don't want you skipping off to your room and pout without knowing why I come by for this visit.
Bob: Why, so you could tell us how sorry you are you had to slap our cousin Albert around?
Jesse: I come by, to ask, if one of you two Fords would care to ride with me in a journey or two. I guess with both agree it ought to be Charley. You been acting sort of testy."
Kate Bush- Never Be Mine

Bob: I've been a nobody all my life. I was the baby. I was the one they made promises to that they never kept. And ever since I can remember it, Jesse James has been as big as a tree. I..I'm prepared for this, Jim. And I want to accomplish it. I know I won't get but this one opportunity and you can bet your life I'm not going to spoil it."

Built to Spill- Stab

Bob: They gave me ten days.
Charley: For what?
Bob: For arresting him.

Cuff The Duke- Blackheart

Jesse: I'll tell you one thing that's for certain. You don't mind dying once you've peeked over to the other side.

Townes Van Zandt- Big Country Blues

"..But love grows old,
And waxes cold,
And fades away like the morning dew."

Lilium- Whitewashed

By his own approximation, Bob assassinated Jesse James over 800 times. He suspected no one in history had ever, so often and so publicly, recapitulated an act of betrayal.

Joni Mitchell- Blue

He was ashamed of his boasting, his pretensions of courage and ruthlessness. He was sorry about his coldbloodedness, his dispassion, his inability to express what he now believed was the case: that he truly regretted killing Jesse, that he missed the man as much as anybody, and wished his murder hadn't been necessary. Even as his circulated his saloon, he knew that the smiles disappeared when he passed by. He received so many menacing letters that he could read them without any reaction except curiosity. He kept to his apartment all day, flipping over playing cards, looking at his destiny in every King and Jack.

Beck- Guess I'm Doing Fine

Over The Rhine- Born
